A proposal by LA NON-MAISON Paris

Cheng Ran was born in 1981 in China. He lives and works in Hangzhou. Since the early 2000s, the artist has constantly explored the physicality of moving images, produced with mobile phone cameras as well as Super 8 or HD.
Invited in 2016 for a residency at LA NON-MAISON Aix-en-Provence to work on the memory of the exhibition “Chine demain pour hier” (Les Domaines de l’art & Fei Dawei, Pourrières, 1990), he has realized a video For Today, Not Tomorrow screened at the Château La Coste to conclude the two-days symposium “Beyond the Story Told” organized by Sacha Guedj-Cohen.
For this second proposal, LA NON-MAISON Paris invites the artist to open a dialog with the Ciné XIII. This historical and mysterious place overlooks the Montmartre Hill as well as its artistic backgrounds; the one of the Avant-Garde, from Picasso to Matisse, those of Nouvelle-Vague and Post-Nouvelle Vague: the story of Claude Lelouch.
In 1983, the French movie director built a 1920s-style cinema’s decor as a stage for his film Edith & Marcel. This set movie will not be used for the final cut. Remained intact, Ciné XIII is now a theater, welcoming cinematographic screenings and plays.
After a week in residency and shots of the Ciné XIII surroundings, Cheng Ran interweaves the stories by inviting us to an imaginary conversation between Claude Lelouch and himself. The thread of this creation is a sound poetry, a Sino-French dialogue at the edge of fiction and reality. The final work proposed as the result of this research will be presented in this true-false decor.
By inserting the artist’s video at the heart of Ciné XIII’s program, multiple looks are intersecting to create an original work, conceived in situ. Two screenings will be organized on Saturday December 16th at 5:30pm and 6:00pm. Moving images and theater life mingle to highlight others temporalities: another time of creation.

Depuis le début des années 2000, l’artiste n’a cessé d’explorer la physicalité des images en mouvement, produites aussi bien avec des caméras de téléphone mobile, Super 8 ou HD.
Invité en résidence en 2016 à LA NON-MAISON pour travailler sur la mémoire de l’exposition « Chine Demain pour hier » (Les Domaines de l’art & Fei Dawei, Pourrières, 1990), il réalise l’œuvre Pour Aujourd’hui, non pas demain, projetée au Château La Coste dans le cadre des deux jours de conférence « Au-delà de l’histoire racontée », organisée par Sacha Guedj-Cohen.
La deuxième invitation de LA NON-MAISON Paris propose à l’artiste de dialoguer avec le Ciné XIII. Ce lieu historique et mystérieux surplombe la butte de Montmartre, ainsi que son passé artistique ; celle des avant-gardes, de Picasso à Matisse, de la Nouvelle-Vague et de l’après Nouvelle-Vague : l’histoire de Claude Lelouch.
En 1983, le réalisateur français fait construire un décor de cinéma style années 1920 qui sert de lieu de tournage pour son film Édith & Marcel. Ce décor ne sera pas utilisé au montage final. Resté intact, le Ciné XIII est aujourd’hui une salle de spectacles vivants, accueillant projections cinématographiques et pièces de théâtre.
Après une semaine de résidence et de prises d’images autour du Ciné XIII, Cheng Ran entremêle les histoires en nous invitant à ce dialogue imaginé entre l’artiste et le réalisateur. Le fil rouge de cette création est une poésie sonore, un dialogue sino-français à la limite de la fiction et du réel.
L’œuvre finale proposée à l’issue de cette recherche sera présentée dans ce vrai faux décor.
En insérant au cœur de la programmation du Ciné XIII la vidéo de l’artiste, ce sont de multiples regards qui se croisent dans la création d’une œuvre originale et pensée in situ. Deux projections seront organisées samedi 16 décembre à 17h30 et 18h00. Images mouvantes et vie du théâtre se mêlent pour créer d’autres temporalités : un autre temps propre à la création.
