Letter 249, 2015

‘Dear Brother,
It’s already late, but I wanted to write to you again. You aren’t here, yet I’m in need of you, and it seems to me as if we aren’t far apart sometimes.’

In response to this letter, Cheng Ran presents two synchronised videos, which make it look as though two people are walking over the beach, one almost like a shadow of the other, a figure in a dream. Their conversation consists of questions derived from Van Gogh’s letter. The other person responds in Ran’s words.

His video is about bridging the time and space between two people, and its greatest source of inspiration is the intensive correspondence between Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo.
